The world of CBD is exciting and interesting, but mostly it’s confusing. Like, what does CBD even stand for? What the heck are terpenes? And WHY does it seem like every word associated with CBD has to have a minimum of twelve letters in it? Well fret no more, we are here to clear the air of confusion. After today you’ll be a walking, talking CBD dictionary.
To start, it is important to talk about what Endocannabinoids and Cannabinoids are. Endocannabinoid refers to the several chemical compounds that are naturally produced within the body. Our Endocannabinoid System is what balances us out (homeostasis). When it is hijacked by THC, we feel the many symptoms of “getting high” from munchies to paranoia.
Cannabinoids are active chemical compounds found naturally in the seeds, stalk, and flowers of cannabis plants. Cannabinoids are sort of like chemical messengers. Their job in the body is to help regulate the endocannabinoid system to maintain homeostasis (balance). THC and CBD are the most prominent cannabinoids found in the Cannabis plant.
Now, what the heck are Cannabidiols and Tetrahydrocannabinols? You might know them as CBD and THC. Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-intoxicating, non-psychoactive cannabinoid found in cannabis. After THC, CBD is the second most prevalent cannabinoid in cannabis. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is one of two specific cannabinoids with psychoactive properties. To be legally classified as CBD there has to be less than .03% of THC.
Lastly, let’s talk Terpenes. Terpenes are oils that give cannabis and other plants their distinctive smells and flavors. Terpenes also play a critical role in differentiating the effects various cannabis strains will have on you after consumption. Some may make you feel relaxed and cool, while others might make you feel more focused and active. Research suggests terpenes may help prevent metabolic disorders, fight cancer, exert anti-aging benefits and more.
